Following the government’s recent advice about the changes to Coronavirus restrictions and the advice that unlimited exercise is now allowed we have been looking at what may be possible for sailing and our members. Whilst it is clear that sailing individually is allowed, as a club event this still remains difficult.

The recent rule changes are quite clear – the restrictions on clubs and social gathering have not been lifted however you are now able to meet ONE other individual from outside your household in the open air, such as parks etc. providing social distancing measures are maintained. Whilst we would love to get members back out sailing on the water, as social distancing restrictions remain in place, and the challenges faced with regards to safety boat cover, in particular the potential need to recover a sailor from the water, which is a requirement of our lease with Canal & Rivers Trust, it remains restrictive in terms of allowing sailing to restart. Launching and recovery of the boat will also be a significant challenge for a maximum of 2 people, whilst also maintaining social distancing requirements.Dinghy Sailing at Rotherham Sailing Club is therefore still not possible.

The clubhouse and club facilities (including equipment) remains closed/restricted to members. The compound however is now accessible for members who wish to maintain/collect their boats or help provide some of the maintenance work required on the exterior premises – If you are attending the club to undertake any of the maintenance work required outside, then the clubhouse/workshop may be accessed for tools etc. on a single person basis after obtaining prior approval from the Directors. This is so we can monitor/control access to the clubhouse should any instances of COVID-19 be encountered by our members. Other than that the clubhouse remains closed and is not accessible.

Yorkshire Open Water Swimming section also remains closed as it is clearly not possible to provide adequate safety cover, whilst also maintaining the required social distancing measures. From a model yacht perspective, individual members may launch and try their boats out, without any organised events, on the understanding there is no safety/recovery boat provided, upon payment of their membership fees to Rotherham Sailing Club. If other members are present they MUST maintain social distancing which, in line with the government guidelines, meaning a maximum of two people sailing is permitted.

We will continue to monitor both the government and RYA guidelines and want to get members back out on the water in safe circumstance as soon as possible. We are attending RYA webinars to obtain guidance and ideas as appropriate, We will keep reviewing what’s possible on an ongoing basis and provide updates as soon as we can. We wish all members a safe transition through these challenging and difficult times.
