Frequently asked questions

Paddlesport FAQs

What types of paddlesport can I do at Harthill?

Harthill Paddlesport Club welcomes kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. Whether you prefer a calm paddle or a gentle workout, there’s something for everyone on the reservoir.

When do sessions take place?

Sessions run every Saturday throughout the year. You’re welcome to come along, enjoy a paddle, have a hot drink, and chat with our friendly members, even if you’re just coming to watch or ask questions.

Who can take part?

Paddlers of all abilities are welcome, from confident beginners to experienced paddlers.
Children are welcome from age 9 upwards. For safety reasons, under 9s are not permitted to paddle.

Do I need experience to join?

No previous experience is required. Newcomers are always welcome, and our regular members are happy to paddle alongside you to help you feel comfortable on your first session. Less confident paddlers will remain in the designated safety area.

Is paddling safe?

Paddling is safe when done responsibly. All paddlers:

  • Paddle entirely at their own risk

  • Must be able to swim 50 metres in open water

  • Must wear a buoyancy aid (PFD) that meets British safety standards at all times on the water and pontoon
Safety craft and spotters may be present, but each participant is responsible for their own safety.

What safety rules do I need to follow on the water?

Key safety rules include:

  • Staying at least 20m from the dam wall and 10m from the shore

  • Returning to shore immediately if the siren or air horn sounds

  • Keeping a safe distance from other water users

  • Never jumping or diving from jetties, the dam wall, or the bridge
All access to the water is from the designated area in front of the clubhouse.

What should I wear and bring?

Dress for the conditions — water temperature can be cold, especially after heavy rain or in windy weather. We recommend:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing

  • A change of clothes

  • Drinking water

  • Suitable footwear for slippery or stony edges
After paddling, dry off and get dressed as quickly as possible.

Are there health considerations I should be aware of?

Yes. Please:

  • Avoid paddling with open cuts or sores

  • Inform a member of the paddlesport team of any medical conditions or medication

  • Seek medical advice if you experience flu-like symptoms, stomach upset, or illness after paddling (and notify the club), as these may indicate Weil’s disease
Hydration before paddling is strongly advised.

Can parents supervise children themselves?

Parents and guardians are fully responsible for their children at all times, both on and off the water. The club cannot provide supervision or control for children.

Can I bring my dog or other spectators?

Yes, dogs are welcome but must be kept under control at all times, and owners must clean up after them. Spectators are welcome and are encouraged to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, wildlife, and walking routes around the reservoir.
